PERSONAL STRUCTURES – IDENTITIES: Venice Art Biennale

Overview

VENICE ART BIENNALE, PALAZZO BEMBO

11 MAY – 24 NOV 2019

La Biennale Di Venezia has been one of the most prestigious cultural institutions in the world for over 120 years. Established in 1895, the Biennale today has an attendance of over 500,000 visitors at the Art Exhibition. It is the leading contemporary visual art exhibition on which others in the world have been modeled.

At the invitation of the ECC and the GAA Foundation, Mario Basner received the honor of being selected for the PERSONAL STRUCTURES exhibition, an official event of the 58th Venice Biennale.

The “Time Space Existence”-themed exhibition is hosted by European Cultural Centre & Global Art Affairs (GAA) Foundation. Time, Space and Existence are the most fundamental themes of mankind. The exhibition aims to acknowledge that all human discoveries and achievements, be it in science, art or any other discipline should lead to a greater awareness about our existence, the existence of all matter and our position within time and space. Architecture of the past and of today, forces us to consider and reconsider.

Architectural photographers have the power to capture this Space in this Time in our Existence, they can document the status and society we live in and additionally, they have many different points of view and approaches. The exhibition illustrates the influence of architecture in a wider sense in our daily life and therewith in our human existence.

Basner’s installation was located facing the Grand Canal in Palazzo Bembo, built in the fourteenth century by the noble Bembo family. The installation included three award winning pieces from his Beelitz sanatorium documentary entitled Choices, Grandeur and Beauty Forgotten. With an unexpected depth and an extraordinary liveliness, the artworks created a mesmerizing dynamic between the images and the audience.

The history of the Biennale dates back to 1895 when the first International Art Exhibition was organized. In the 1930’s new festivals were born: Music, Cinema and Theatre (the Venice Film Festival in 1932 was the first film festival in history). In 1980, the first International Architecture Exhibition took place and in 1999, Dance made its debut at La Biennale.
